PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To clearly display the image of a blood vessel exist in a tissue such as a mucous membrane by emphasizing both end parts of the blood vessel.

SOLUTION: The down-edge parts and up-edge parts of both ends in the width direction of the blood vessel are detected on the basis of the G-signal outputted from an RGB color conversion circuit 21 in an edge detection circuit 30. For example, coefficients (Kr and Kb) smaller than 1 are selected with respect to the detected down-edge parts in an R-coefficient selector 32 and a B-coefficient selector 34, and an R-signal and a BV-signal are multiplied by these coefficients in multipliers 35A and 35B. By this constitution, both end parts of the blood vessel are emphasized so that the left end part thereof becomes blackish and the right end part thereof becomes reddish and the blood vessel exist in a mucous membrane can be clearly displayed on a monitor.
