PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper sheet distinguishing device capable of preventing a crucial sorting error at the time of the occurrence of abnormality. SOLUTION: A paper sheet sorting device driving a gate for sorting sheets to sort the sheets to a prescribed sorting destination based on the control of an operation control program, is provided with a reset signal outputting means (42) for counting up to output the reset signal corresponding to a signal outputted when the program is abnormally executed and a gate driving signal outputting means (43) for outputting a signal to control the drive of the gate to sort the sheets to the destination prescribed for the occurrence of the abnormality in the program according to the reset signal outputted by the reset signal outputting means.
