PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silica having not only a large pore volume and a large specific surface area but also a narrow pore size distribution as well as excellent physical properties such as heat resistance and waterproofness, capable of suppressing amounts of useless metal impurities. SOLUTION: This silica has a most frequent pore diameter (D<SB>max</SB>) of≤20 nm, and the chemical shiftδ(ppm) of Q<SP>4</SP>peak in a solid Si-NMR satisfies the inequality (1): -0.0705×(D<SB>max</SB>)-110.36>δ.
