An impact machine includes a ram (1) and an anvil (3) which includes a tool (2) and the object being worked, the anvil being moveable vertically so that it may move upwards to meet the ram as the ram moves downwards. Preferably the anvil assembly has a mass at least ten times that of the ram, and its upward velocity is preferably at least ten times lower than the downward velocity of the ram.
