PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a glycoside with low odor having a high water solubility, a tyrosinase inhibiting activity, an active oxygen scavenging activity, an antibacterial activity and little side effects on the human body, and also to provide a method for producing the glycoside at a low cost with a high industrial productivity. SOLUTION: 2-Methoxy-4-glucosaminomethylphenol of formula (I) and a Shiff base compound of formula (II) are provided. A method for producing 2-methoxy-4-glucosaminomethylphenol which reduces a Shiff base compound of formula (II) and a method for producing the Shiff base compound by reacting D-glucosamine of formula (III) with vanillin are also provided. In addition, uses of the 2-methoxy-4-glucosaminomethylphenol, such as a cosmetic containing the compound, are also provided. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
