PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary impact tool, which is able to easily select various operation modes, such as a high-speed and small-torque mode, a low-speed and large-torque mode. SOLUTION: The rotary impact tool 1 is provided with a hammer 4 which is fitted to a driving shaft 2 and rotates together with the driving shaft 2, a hammer pawl 11 projected from the hammer 4, an anvil 3 which has an engaging portion 10 for engaging with the hammer pawl 11 and rotates together with the hammer 4 by the engagement, and a structure for making the hammer pawl 11 engage with the engaging portion 10 again giving an impact after once withdrawing the hammer 4 when a load larger than or equal to a certain limit is applied. The anvil 3 is able to axially slide, and also a pair of hammer pawls 11a, 11b having different projection height project from the hammer 4 such that the number of the impact of the hammer 4 for every required rotations can be changed according to the slid position of the anvil 3.
