PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an additive for a glaze having a good property, whereby a carboxymethyl cellulose salt having a desired etherification rate and viscosity suitable for producing high-quality ceramics, is selectively produced. SOLUTION: The additive for the glaze is composed of the carboxymethyl cellulose salt having the etherification rate of 0.4-2.5 and the viscosity at 25°C of an aqueous solution, containing an anhydrous material of 1 wt.%, of 10-5,000 mPa*s and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), wherein a ratio of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) to a total quantity of the said carboxymethyl cellulose and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) is preferably 0.1-50 wt.%.
