PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a novel pyridine compound useful as a raw material for an enzyme inhibitor such as an NO synthesis inhibitor, to obtain its precursor, and to provide methods for producing them. SOLUTION: The novel pyridine compound being an alkyl 2-formylamino-3-(2- pyridyl)propionate represented by formula (I) (wherein R is a 1-3C alkyl, desirably, ethyl) is produces by reducing a novel pyridine compound precursor being an alkyl 2-formylamino-3-(2-pyridyl)propenoate obtained by reacting 2- pyridylaldehyde with an alkyl isocyanoacetate in the presence of an amine compound.
