<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an economically suitable method for manufacturing a sphingoid base, and particularly a method for manufacturing a sphingosine, more particularly D-erythrosphingosine, serviceable in an industrial scale from phytosphingosine as a starting material. <P>SOLUTION: This method for manufacturing the sphingoid base represented by formula (II) comprises (1) a step for dissolving a starting compound represented by formula (III) or a salt thereof in a substantially inert solvent, (2) a step for protecting an NH<SB>2</SB>group with an NH<SB>2</SB>-protecting group, (3) a step for activating C<SB>4</SB>HR<SP>3</SP>' for the elimination reaction with C<SB>5</SB>HR<SP>4</SP>, (4) a step for forming a double bond between the C<SB>4</SB>carbon atom and the C<SB>5</SB>carbon atom by causing the elimination reaction, and (5) a step for removing the NH<SB>2</SB>- protecting group. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO</p> |
