A non-poisonous protective gas for use in annealing furnaces &c. is produced by burning a carbon containing fuel with such a quantity of air that the resulting products contain carbon monoxide, or carbon monoxide and hydrogen, in quantity equivalent to the desired amount of hydrogen in the final product, and catalytically converting the carbon monoxide with steam into carbon dioxide and hydrogen. The steam required may be generated by injecting water into the hot gases. Two examples are given in which coke oven gas, and coke are used as fuels, and the final gas, after removal of the bulk of the carbon dioxide, contains approximately 92 per cent of nitrogen, 6 per cent of hydrogen 1 per cent of carbon dioxide and ,4 to ,6 per cent of carbon monoxide.
|
