PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device and an image reader built-in device using the same, capable of surely improving the balance of white color in the light received by an image reading means by adjusting the number of voltage waves generated during one-reading period and having the repeated waveform, to a specific value. SOLUTION: This discharge lamp lighting device comprising a triangular wave generating circuit including a capacitor C2 and a resistance value variable resistor R3 wherein the transmitted frequency is adjusted to generate the predetermined number of triangular waves in one period of a synchronous signal mentioned below, by the operation, a control part CC1 comprising a drive signal generating circuit generating a drive signal PWM controlled on the basis of the triangular waves, a synchronous signal receiving part SYC1 for temporarily stopping the operation of the control part every receiving the synchronous signal, a lighting circuit part OC1 wherein a switching element Q1 driven by the drive signal, and an output transformer T are connected in series to a DC power source DC1, and outputting the output voltage of repeated waveform, and a discharge lamp DDL forming a phosphor layer mainly composed of three-band phosphor as its main component.
