PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect a bi-directio thyristor against a spike voltage when an L load is used or when power is turned on. SOLUTION: In the bi-directional thyristor 11 interposed between a power supply 16 and a load 15 to form a closed circuit in conjunction with these members and having a first terminal 12 on the load side, a second terminal 13 on the power supply side and a gate 14, a semiconductor element 17 having an overvoltage protective function is disposed between the first terminal 12 or the second terminal 13 and the gate 14.
