PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid state image sensor and its driving method, in which the generation of a knee component (knee characteristics), i.e., increment in the storage quantity of charges caused by an overflow current, is suppressed without causing any deterioration in sensitivity as an image sensor or deterioration in characteristics, e.g. S/N ratio or dynamic range. SOLUTION: A control electrode 20 for controlling potential at an overflow barrier section 1 is provided and the generation of a knee component at the overflow barrier section 1 is suppressed by controlling the potential of the control electrode 20. The control electrode 20 may be buried in the overflow barrier section 1 or may be arranged to come into electrical contact with the surface of the overflow barrier section 1. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
