<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the number of cards present in a card reader. <P>SOLUTION: The reader writer is provided with a command transmission part which oscillates a command for detecting an information recording carrier, a command response part which transmits a response corresponding to the command, and a storage part which stores the presence of the information recording carrier when the command response part receives the response. Further, a detection part which physically detects the information recording carrier is provided and the number of cards is judged from the response of the detection part.
