PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily recognize a state of improper detection sensitivity of a detector. SOLUTION: This commodity detecting device for an automatic vending machine comprises an electrostatic capacity sensor 106 to detect a canned drink in accordance with change of reference frequencies when the canned drink passes a prescribed position in a commodity storage 101. It comprises a timer which starts counting time every time the electrostatic capacity sensor 106 detects each canned drink, a ROM which stores the original reference frequency, and a main control part 201 which compares the reference frequency of the electrostatic capacity sensor 106 when the timer counts a specified time with the reference frequency of a memory, and output an alarm signal when the reference frequency of the electrostatic capacity sensor 106 is different from the reference frequency of the memory.
