A surface-coated cutting tool member having a tungsten carbide base hard metal substrate, a titanium carbo-nitride base cermet substrate or a cubic system boron nitride base sintered material and, formed on the surface thereof by the physical deposition method with an average layer thickness of 1 to 15 μm, a hard coating layer of a composite nitride of Al and Ti, characterized in that, in the hard coating layer, points having local maximums for Al content (local minimums for Ti content) and points having local minimums for Al content (local maximums for Ti content) are alternately present repeatedly along the direction of the thickness of the coating layer at given intervals, Al(Ti) contents are continuously changed from a point having a local maximum for Al content (a local minimum for Ti content) to a point having a local minimum for Al content (a local maximum for Ti content) and from a point having a local minimum for Al content (a local maximum for Ti content) to a point having a local maximum for Al content (a local minimum for Ti content), a point having a local maximum for Al content satisfies the empirical formula: (AlxTi1-x)N wherein x represents 0.70 to 0.95 in an atomic ratio and a point having a local minimum for Al content satisfies the empirical formula: (AlYTi1-Y)N wherein Y represents 0.40 to 0.65, and the interval between adjacent points having a local maximum for Al content and having a local minimum for Al content is 0.01 to 0.1 μm. The surface-coated cutting tool member has a hard coating layer exhibiting excellent abrasion resistance in high-speed cutting.
|
