The invention relates to a method and device for image processing, in addition to a night viewing system for motor vehicles, whereby a standard camera provides images, said camera being sensitive in the near infrared range and said images being displayed on a display means having a lower resolution in comparison with the camera. The invention also relates to an image processing system which improves the rough images of the sensor by means of an image defining method and/or a contrast enhancement method, so that a display on a display means is made possible for the observation thereof by an observer.
