466,258. Mercury and other conducting - liquid switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 16, 1936, No. 31314. Convention date, Nov. 15, 1935. [Class 38 (v)] A mercury switch comprising two metal end caps 1 sealed by a bead of glass 3 and separated by an insulating diaphragm having a hole through which mercury 4 passes in the " on " position, is rotatably mounted in a housing 6 between two projecting contacts 10 which engage depressions in the caps 1, and serve to conduct the current to the caps. The switch is operated by a handle 16, which is held in place by spring strips 20. In a modification, Figs. 9-13 (not shown), two such switches are mounted side by side and operated by the one handle, and may be arranged so that they are both " on " and " off " together or so that one is " on " when the other is " off." This arrangement may thus provide a double-pole switch or a two-way switch.
|
