PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To elongate the service life of a discharge lamp lighting device by mounting an electrolytic condenser at a place of low ambient temperature to prevent the deterioration thereof, and replacing only the electrolytic condenser when the electrolytic condenser deteriorates. SOLUTION: In this discharge lamp lighting device comprising a DC power source generating part 9 for obtaining the DC voltage from an AC power source 1, and a power supply part 5 for inputting the DC voltage of the DC power source generating part 9 and supplying the electric power to a discharge lamp 10, and further comprising the electrolytic condenser 7 on the DC power source generating part 9 for smoothing the DC voltage, a ripple voltage detecting circuit 13 is mounted to detect the increase of the ripple voltage of the DC voltage of the DC power source generating part 9.
