PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable and compact input device equipped with five character input keys, a selection key for switching a character group, function keys for operating mode switching/conversion/cancellation/erasure/decision, a pointing device, and a display control means capable of easily and quickly inputting characters and its portable input method. SOLUTION: This portable input device and method is provided with selection keys for successively selecting a character group in 5 columns and 5 input keys respectively provided corresponding to the selected character group in 5 columns for inputting one depressed character according as one input key is depressed.
