The gearbox has at least one synchronous gear and several load gears that can be shifted in a manual mode or in at least one automatic load shifting mode. A desired engine revolution rate for setting by an all revolution rate regulator, a synchronous gear and at least one permissible load gear range (A1,A2) can be specified by the driver for an automatic shifting mode to set a vehicle speed.
