In a digital process to capture an image of a piece of textile or leather prior to cutting into individual patterns, the material (12) is first laid out on a bench. The material image is captured as a number of overlapping data frames (94). The image data frames are calibrated to correct for distortion, and the data is combined by a computer to generate a combined single image which has an area greater than that of the individual frames (94). The computer then automatically arranges the pattern images to maximize the number of patterns that can be cut from the piece of material in question, simultaneously excluding material zones with relevant blemishes or faults. Also claimed is a commensurate computer-driven cutting bench.
