The refuse or recycling bin has a hinged lid which is opened by a foot pedal (12) linked to a vertical connecting rod (10) which grips the base of the lid. The rod passes through an aperture (19) in the rim of the lid and through a slit in a brake (18). A parallel expansion slit forms a strip with the first slit and this is pressed against the rod.
