FLUORESCENT DETECTION OF PROTEINS IN POLYACRYLAMIDE GELS

The UV light-induced reaction between the indole moiety of tryptophan (Trp) and haloalkanes permits rapid visualization of protein resolved by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). The gel incorporates a haloalkane which reacts with Trp and fluoresces under UV light. The haloalkane may be incorporated prior to polymerization of the gel or subsequently.
