A photocatalytic composite material having high activity and being excellent in durability is prepared by coating the surface of a substrate with a continuous film of titanium dioxide through the vapor deposition method using titanium tetrachloride. When the substrate is an assembly of inorganic fibers such as a glass cloth, each fiber or filament is coated with titanium dioxide. A method which comprises a vapor deposition step of contacting a substrate heated to 100 to 300 °C such as an assembly of inorganic fibers with a mixed vapor of a vapor of the titanium tetrachloride purified by distillation and a water vapor, to form a film of a titanium dioxide precursor on the surface of the substrate, and a heating step of heating the substrate to 300 to 600 °C in an oxidizing atmosphere, to thereby convert the precursor to titanium dioxide, provides a continuous film of a photocatalyst formed on the substratrate , which comprises a crystalline titanium dioxide having an average crystallite diameter of 50 nm or less and exhibits high activity and good adhesion to the substrate.
|
