TORERO PROTEIN

Evidence is provided for a new mechanism by which Wg signaling regulates the shape of the Wg protein gradient. High levels of Wg signaling induce expression of a protein with similarity to predicted pectin acetylesterases from plants and plant pathogens. We have called this gene Torero based on its loss-of-function mutant phenotype Andalucian for dragonfly. When overexpressed Torero blocks Wg activity. Loss of Torero function leads to increased Wg activity by altering the shape of the Wg protein gradient. Torero activity is required in the embryo and the imaginal discs to limit Wg activity.
