The machine tool has a suction system (33) which extracts dirty air (62) from the working zone (15). The sliding mechanism (19) for the machine tool spindle (17) is over the workpiece clamping surface (14) and preferably over the working zone. The dirty air is drawn through the machine tool base (11) and preferably in the machine base. The dirty air is extracted parallel to the clamping surface drawn down through a labyrinth seal (63-63b) at the base.
