A cyclone separator for use in a vacuum cleaner (10, figure 1) has a cyclone chamber 550 and a dirt collection bin 540. The cyclone chamber has a tangential inlet 152 and an axial outlet 154 for clean air. The axial outlet depends from the top of the cyclone chamber and is formed with a louvred cage 570, where individual blades thereof are angled such that the airflow direction is reversed when passing through the louvred section (figure 4). Depending from the louvred outlet is a solid separation plate 158, the circumference of which, combined with the cyclone wall defines a passage through which slow moving air and dirt can pass into the dirt collection bin. The dirt collection bin is fitted with airflow inhibitors which take the form of free standing prongs 580 extending from the base of the bin or fins 586 which extend from the side wall of the bin.
