PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize occurrence of a defective product on splitting in a cross- scribing method of a hard brittle plate such as a glass plate and a ceramic plate is split along splitting lines intersecting each other, and a apparatus thereof by forming of an optimum crack and preventing of skipping of a line. SOLUTION: A scribe line 17 of a first direction is cut and, thereafter, a scribe line of a second direction which intersects the scribe line 17 of the first direction is cut in the splitting of the hard brittle plate by means of the cross- scribing break. When a cutter 6 intersects the scribe line 17 of the first direction which is cut already, a cutting depth or/and a cutting force of the cutter 6 is temporarily made large. The scribing condition other than the case that the cutter 6 intersects the scribe line 17 of the first direction is set so as to satisfy such a requirement that horizontal crack is minimized and vertical crack of a necessary depth is obtained.
