PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microorganism-killing method in water system under reductive atmosphere, particularly in a reductive bleaching step of pulp including recovery of waste paper and steps after reductive bleaching of pulp in a papermaking process, and in a starch slurry preparation step. SOLUTION: This water-based microorganism-killing method under reductive atmosphere comprises simultaneously adding (A) a quaternary ammonium salt compound represented by general formula (1) (wherein one to three groups among R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>are methyl groups and/or ethyl groups and the other(s) is selected from a 6-22C alkyl group which may have hydroxy group and/or benzene ring, an 8-22C alkenyl group and an 8-22C aryl group) and (B) one or more kinds of a specific halogenated nitroamide compound, a nitroalcohol compound, a halogenated acetate compound, a halogenated (hydroxy)oxime compound, a thiocyanate compound, an aldehyde compound and an isothiazoline compound to a water system under reductive atmosphere.
