PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal composition giving a high order parameter. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition is characterized by comprising a host liquid crystal and a dioxazine pigment having a substituent represented by the formula (a): -(Het)<SB>j</SB>-[(B<SP>1</SP>)<SB>p</SB>-(Q<SP>1</SP>)<SB>q</SB>-(B<SP>2</SP>)<SB>r</SB>]<SB>n</SB>-C<SP>1</SP>äHet is oxygen atom, NR<SP>a</SP>or sulfur atom; R<SP>a</SP>is H, an alkyl, an aryl or a heteroaryl; B<SP>1</SP>or B<SP>2</SP>are each a divalent aryl, a heteroaryl or a cyclic hydrocarbon group; Q<SP>1</SP>is a divalent bonding group; C<SP>1</SP>is an alkyl, a cycloalkyl, an alkoxy, an alkoxycarbonyl or an acyloxy; (j) is 0 or 1; (p), (q) or (r) are each an integer of 0 to 5; (n) is an integer of 1 to 3; [(p)+(r)]×(n) is 3 to 10}.
