A method and a system for robust occupant position control prior to vehicle impact is disclosed which includes, in response to detecting an object, generating a collision index value representing a likelihood of collision with the detected object 54, generating a lateral displacement value indicative of a distance to the detected object 54 and determining a weight value for a vehicle occupant. When the collision index and lateral displacement values exceed respective thresholds, the method generates a pre-tensioner output value as a function of the collision index and weight values and activates a seatbelt pre-tensioner 22 associated with a seat of the vehicle occupant as a function of the pre-tensioner output value.
