The cell (1) comprises two separate compartments (4, 5) separated by an ion exchange membrane (6) and only one compartment contains an ion exchange resin (7). An electrochemical cell for removing ions from an optionally aqueous solution by ion exchange comprises anode and cathode cavities separated by a cation exchange membrane. These cavities contain an anode and cathode respectively and are provided with an inlet and outlet. The cell comprises two separate compartments separated by the ion exchange membrane and only one compartment contains an ion exchange resin.
