<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a waveguide having a small light scattering loss. <P>SOLUTION: An ultrashort pulse laser beam 11-1 is converged to a transparent body 10 and the transparent body 10 containing at least one kind of refractive index controlling additives is irradiated with the beam 11-1 to form a light propagation layer 14, and thereafter another laser beam 15-1 having a wavelength to be absorbed to the transparent body 10 is converged to the layer 14 and the layer 14 is irradiated with the beam 15-1. The scattering loss of signal light in an obtained light propagation layer 17 is reduced because not only refractive index controlling additives in the light propagation layer 14 are thermally diffused to change the refractive index distribution in the width direction of the light propagation layer but also the light propagation layer and the refractive index distribution in the lengthwise direction thereof are made uniform. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO</p> |
