PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely, certainly and automatically discriminate a variety of recorded media such as ordinary paper, coated paper, glossy paper, an OHP sheet, etc. SOLUTION: Fiber orientation and glossiness of a surface of the recorded medium are optically detected by using emission elements 12, 14 and light receiving elements 16, 18, 20, and the kind of the recorded medium is discriminated in accordance with their detection results.
