PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a traction type elevator capable of rapidly stopping a car while sufficiently and certainly securing a frictional force between a hoist sheave and a main rope in an emergency braking time by a hoist brake, without changing a hanging method of the main rope on the hoist sheave and a groove shape of the hoist sheave and without decreasing service life of the main rope. SOLUTION: In the traction type elevator, the hoist sheave 1 is braked by the hoist brake 7 in an emergency. The car 3 driven by the hoist sheave 1 is provided with an auxiliary braking device 12 having a brake shoe connectable to guide rails 5a and 5b by pressure. In the emergency braking time by the hoist brake 7, the auxiliary braking device 12 is operated to connect the brake shoe to the guide rails 5a and 5b by pressure and brakes them.
