PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light control device, a method of driving the same, and an image pickup device for securing an always large optical density ratio (contrast ratio, dynamic range) without regard to an operation environment temperature and simultaneously attaining speedily transient response operation. SOLUTION: The light control device comprises a liquid crystal element, a detection part for detecting an element environment temperature, and a pulse signal control part which receives a detected value detected by the detection part and varies the frequency of an AC pulse for driving the liquid crystal element according to the element environment temperature. The image pickup device has the light control device arranged in the optical path of an image pickup system. The method is used to drive the light control device comprising the liquid crystal element. The frequency of the AC pulse to be applied to the liquid crystal element is varied according to the environment temperature of the liquid crystal element with the method. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
