The terminals (14-1 to 14-3) of a three phase alternator (14) are connected to a 12V battery (10) through controlled (50) switched diodes (30-1 to 30-3) and to a 36V battery (12) through diodes (32-1 to 30-3). The switching frequency is ten times that of the alternator. In a first period the alternator charges the 12V battery then the switched diodes open and the alternator voltage plus the alternator winding inductance charge the 36V battery
