PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which can continue a read in a monochromatic mode even if the quantity of light of a light emitting element used for the read is insufficient. SOLUTION: When the read mode of a document image is a monochromatic mode, a control part 11 adjusts the illumination duty of the light emitting element prior to a read of the document image so that the quantity of light emitted by a green LED used for the read becomes a light quantity matching the read and drives, for example, a red LED if a light quantity needed to read the document image can not be obtained by, the illumination of only the green LED, thereby compensating the light quantity needed to read the document image.
