PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the loss of light in a polarized light conversion element. SOLUTION: First and second plate-like translucent members 321 and 322 are prepared. The first translucent member 321 has first and second surfaces (film formation surfaces) approximately parallel with each other. A polarized light separation film 331 is formed on the first film forming surface. A reflection film 332 is formed on the second film forming surface. These films are not formed on the surface of the second translucent member 322. A plurality of the first translucent members 321 and a plurality of the second translucent members 322 are alternately bonded together. The translucent members thus bonded together are cut out at a prescribed angle to a surface, and their cutting planes are polished to form a polarized beam splitter array 320. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
