PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To resolve technical and legal difficulties of designing wide band transmitter/receiver for distance measurement of a short distance stationary object by wave due to requirement of wide frequency band and regulation of the frequency band on wave utilization. SOLUTION: A wave synthesizer detecting the synthesized wave of reflection wave and transmission wave received with a reception means, a phase shifter capable of shifting at least one of phases of the reflection wave or the transmission wave in a front stage of a detector are provided. The transmission wave frequency or the phase is shifted to make a peak of the detected voltage, and then the frequency or the phase is varied for a certain degree. Next, the position of the object is measured from the frequency or phase shift required for making the detected voltage varying to peak. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
