PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material testing machine capable of freely changing a restricting condition of a test specimen in a high accuracy and continuously controlling a distortion. SOLUTION: The material testing machine 10 comprises a first griping unit 12 and a second gripping unit 13 for gripping both ends of the test specimen 1, a telescopic shaft 52 connected to the first gripping unit 12 to conduct a linear motion along an axial direction in response to an elongation or a contraction of the specimen 1, a rotary drive means 30, a reduction gear 40 for decelerating the rotating output of the means 30, and a motion converting means 65 for converting the rotating motion of the rotary output unit 42B of the gear 40 to a linear motion of the shaft 52. In this machine 10, teeth provided at least at one of constituting elements of the gear 40 are formed of an elastic material to eliminate a backlash or to extremely reduce the backlash.
