PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 5-ethylhydantoin useful as an intermediate for producing an amino acid in high yield. SOLUTION: The 5-ethylhydantoin can be produced in high yield by reacting propionaldehyde with ammonia, carbon dioxide and an alkali metal cyanide compound (step 1) and then heat-treating the resultant reactional mixture in the presence of an acid (step 2).
