PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 2- tribromomethylsulfonylanthraquinone. SOLUTION: This method for producing the 2- tribromomethylsulfonylanthraquinone comprises subjecting 2- methylsulfonylanthraquinone expressed by general formula (1) to oxidation and bromination to form the 2-tribromomethylsulfonylanthraquinone expressed by general formula (2). Phenylthioacetic acids or their salts are preferably subjected to the oxidation and bromination by using bromine, or by using a hypobromite salt, in the presence of a base and water, so that an aromatic tribromomethylsulfonyl derivative is produced. An alkali metal hydroxide is preferably used as the base. Sodium hypobromite or potassium hypobromite is preferably used as the hypobromite salt. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
