<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an in-line type image forming device which can reduce deterioration such as saving of a surface layer of a photosensitive body, deformation of a developing means, and a waste of a developer and avoid staining of paper without making image formation precision nor transfer material carrying precision worse. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming device having a plurality of image forming means Pa, Pb, Pc, and Pd and an image conveying body 11 is characterized by that respective image carries 1 always abut against the image conveying body 11 and contacting and leaving between a developing means 40 and the image carries 1 and driving and stopping of the developing means 40 can be switched by the image forming means Pa, Pb, Pc, and Pd; when an image is formed, all the image carriers 1 and image conveying body 11 are driven and a desired developing means 40 is selectively driven and then brought into contact with the image carriers to form the image.
