PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absolute type rotary encoder capable of miniaturizing even if the number of bits is increased, reducing cost, and easily obtaining high resolution. SOLUTION: A code pattern 34 on a code plate 22 corresponding to high order two bits of the rotary encoder for obtaining a code comprising five bits is made common, a fourth slider 44 and a fifth slider 45 are made to contact with the code pattern at angle slippage corresponding to phase difference to obtain a signal of high order two bits constituting a code. A code pattern 31 in the outermost circumference is used to obtain a signal of the least significant bit, a fourth projection part 22i is installed in the code plate 22, and a round hole 23a rotatably supporting the fourth projection part 22i is installed in a slider holding body 23 holding sliders 41-47, so that the code plate 22 and the slider holding body 23 are accurately positioned.
