PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the properties of exhaust emission and suppress the deterioration of lubricating oil. SOLUTION: In this device for controlling the combustion of an engine, when the diesel engine 10 is in a specified operating state for performing a premixing compression ignition combustion, the premixture of air and fuel supplied in a combustion chamber is compressed and ignited at a specified ignition timing to start the combustion. When the diesel engine 10 is positioned near an upper dead center in an exhaust stroke, valve timing variable mechanisms 17 and 18 are controlled so that an intake valve 15 and exhaust valve 16 are closed, and a fuel injection valve 19C is controlled so as to inject liquid fuel toward a cavity formed in the crown face of a piston 11. Thus fuel is prevented from adhering to the inner wall of a cylinder 12 to increase the properties of the exhaust emission and suppress the deterioration of the lubricating oil.
