PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine control device to reduce a torque shock due to switching of combustion and the occurrence of engine stall due to a fluctuation of the number of revolutions, by limiting an operation area where a load demand is fluctuated by a driver and a combustion switching demand during starting of especially a MT-loaded vehicle. SOLUTION: The engine control device comprises: a combustion region deciding means to decide whether a present operation area can realize stratified charge combustion; a switching limitation deciding means to decide by a driver that a load fluctuation occurs during starting; a combustion switching deciding means to decide whether switching is actually started (permitted) based on a result of each of the deciding means; and a means to control each actuator by the output of the combustion switching deciding means. This constitution predicts and recognizes a change of a load demand to an engine changed by a way of clutch operation during starting and by limiting a switching demand for combustion, the occurrence of a torque shock due to a difference in combustion and a fluctuation of the number of revolutions is reduced.
