PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating an internal combustion engine to enable continuous regulation of parameters for operating a suction valve and staged switching of a another one parameter. SOLUTION: Operation of a suction valve of an internal combustion engine is described in the parameters of at least a valve opening angle, a valve closing angle, a valve stroke curves (H1 and H2), and a valve stroke curve. At least one parameter (pn) is continuously regulatable and at least one another parameter (H1 or H2) can be switched in stages. To avoid a sudden change of torque generated by the internal combustion engine during switching, before the parameters (H1 and H2) which can be switched in phases are switched, the continuously regulatable parameter (pn) is regulated (72) such that on switching (74) of the parameters (H1 and H2) switchable in stages, at least one stage value (r1) of combustion of a combustion chamber allotted to the suction valve is not entirely changed or slightly changed.
