PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 3-quinuclidinone, with which a new extraction solvent is not required, the amount of drainage is small and which has slight environmental load and is economically advantageous. SOLUTION: 3-Quinuclidinone is produced by (1) subjecting a 1- alkoxycarbonylmethyl-4-alkoxycarbonylpiperidine (starting compound) represented by general formula (I) to intramolecular condensation in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of an excessive amount of an alkali metal alkoxide and (2) subjecting a mixed reaction solution containing the. obtained 2- alkoxycarbonyl-3-quinuclidinone enolate salt represented by general formula (II) and a hydrocarbon solvent to hydrolysis/decarbonation treatment with an alkali metal hydroxide. The amount of the mol of the alkali metal hydroxide in the water phase in the reaction mixture formed by the process (2) is 2-3 times the amount of the mol of the starting compound and the concentration of the alkali metal hydroxide is controlled in 35-55 mass %.
